Reverse Engineering

Metrology-Grade Scan-to-CAD for Complex Geometry

Reverse engineering through 3D laser scanning and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) measurement is one of the most efficient and accurate methods for creating digital models of physical objects. By capturing data through 3D laser scanning, CMM measurement, or a combination of both, we generate point clouds and 3D mesh models that are used to produce precise as-built 3D CAD models. This process is widely used across industries to recreate specialized parts and equipment for CNC milling, 3D printing, digital twin development, and 2D CAD documentation. It also supports equipment development, modification, and optimization while reducing time and cost.

For small to medium-sized objects, we often combine CMM measurement with 3D laser scanning using our laser trackers, measuring arms, and metrology-grade handheld 3D laser scanners to achieve the highest possible accuracy while capturing fine details and small features. For medium to large-sized objects, we typically use a combination of laser tracker measurement and terrestrial 3D laser scanning to achieve a high level of both accuracy and detail. In critical smaller areas, terrestrial 3D laser scan data can also be supplemented with data from our measuring arms and metrology-grade handheld 3D laser scanners to achieve the highest level of accuracy and detail. We also perform X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis to accurately determine material composition, including carbon content in steels, to help ensure that the reverse-engineered part closely matches the original.

Using specialized software and refined workflows, we convert raw measurement data from our CMMs and 3D laser scanners into accurate as-built 3D CAD models. These models can then be further developed into as-built 2D CAD drawings and documentation. The result is reliable digital data that supports manufacturing, inspection, redesign, and further engineering development.
