Storage Tank Inspection & Calibration

High-Precision Storage Tank Inspection & Calibration

Storage tank inspection & calibration demand a high level of accuracy, as even small dimensional deviations can affect volume calculations, settlement analysis, and the overall assessment of tank condition. Compared with conventional inspection methods, 3D laser scanning offers a much faster, safer, and more accurate way to capture the geometry of a storage tank in full detail. By collecting millions of data points per second, 3D laser scanners create highly accurate point cloud data that records the true as-built condition of the tank, allowing inspection and calibration work to be carried out with greater confidence while reducing downtime, manual measurement error, and overall project cost.

Using specialized software for storage tank inspection, we process the 3D laser scan data to generate a comprehensive inspection & calibration report. This report includes essential analyses such as volume from elevation (tank strapping table), best cylinder (plumbness), 3D color maps, 2D color map unrolls, differential settlements, localized settlements, roundness, and verticality calculated in accordance with API 653 standards. Because the analysis is based on highly detailed and accurate 3D laser scan data, the results provide a far more complete representation of actual tank geometry than conventional methods that rely on limited measurement points.

Our 3D laser scanning workflow is suitable for a wide range of storage tank sizes, shapes, and types, including both aboveground and underground storage tanks. Depending on project requirements and site conditions, we can perform 3D laser scanning from either the outside or the inside of the tank to generate the inspection & calibration report. This is a major advantage, as internal access is not always possible due to safety and operational constraints. The speed and coverage of 3D laser scanning make it possible to capture complete tank geometry efficiently while maintaining the level of detail needed for accurate inspection & calibration analysis.

Where required, we also create as-built 3D CAD models of internal structures and objects inside the storage tank, such as internal piping. This allows the volume of internal objects to be accounted for and subtracted when producing the volume from elevation (tank strapping table), resulting in a more accurate final calibration. We can also provide as-built 3D CAD models of the storage tank that are compatible with FEA programs, allowing clients to carry out further structural and engineering analysis using their preferred software. By combining high-accuracy 3D laser scanning, specialized analysis software, and detailed modeling workflows, we deliver dependable storage tank inspection & calibration results tailored to the technical requirements of each project.
